Po celou noc/ All Night Long

Britský film Po celou noc je aktualizací Shakespearova Othella, s dějem přeneseným do prostředí londýnské jazzové scény počátku 60. let. Během jednoho večera sledujeme snahu bubeníka Johnnyho Cousina rozjet vlastní kapelu. Celý plán ovšem závisí na zpěvačce Delii, která soustavně odmítá návrat na hudební scénu, aby mohla trávit čas s manželem, kapelníkem a pianistou Aureliem Rexem. Johnny dá do pohybu komplikovanou síť intrik s cílem manželskou dvojici rozeštvat a dosáhnout svého. Film zaujme nejen chytrým přepracováním othellovských motivů, ale také přesvědčivým vykreslením hudebního prostředí: jazz v narativu zaujímá důležitou roli a na plátně se objeví celá plejáda skutečných muzikantů. Důkazem, že hollywoodská černá listina měla transatlantický dosah, je skutečnost, že levicově smýšlející americký scenárista Paul Jarrico musel být v titulcích uveden pod pseudonymem Peter Achilles. The British film All Night Long is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, with the story set against the backdrop of London’s jazz scene in the early 1960s. Over the course of a single evening, we follow drummer Johnny Cousin’s efforts to start his own band. However, the entire plan depends on the singer Delia, who consistently refuses to return to the music scene so she can spend time with her husband, the bandleader and pianist Aurelius Rex. Johnny sets in motion a complicated web of intrigue with the goal of driving a wedge between the married couple and getting his way. The film captivates not only with its clever reworking of Othello-esque motifs but also with its convincing portrayal of the musical world: jazz plays an important role in the narrative, and a whole host of real-life musicians appear on screen. Proof that the Hollywood blacklist had transatlantic reach is the fact that the left-leaning American screenwriter Paul Jarrico had to be credited under the pseudonym Peter Achilles. (mh)
