Sbohem buď, lásko má/ Farewell, My Lovely

Přestože se pro roli Philipa Marlowea perfektně hodil, ve 40. letech, kdy se hollywoodská studia opakovaně vracela k románům Raymonda Chandlera, na něj řada nedošla . Dočkal se až s odstupem několika dekád, když mu bylo okolo šedesátky. Řeč je o ikonickém Robertu Mitchumovi, který si nakonec Marlowea zahrál dokonce dvakrát v sedmdesátkových readaptacích románů Sbohem buď, lásko má a Hluboký spánek. Na NFF uvádíme první z nich, retro-noir v režii stále žijícího, letos devadesátiletého Dicka Richardse. Skutečnost, že Marlowea hraje stárnutím poznamenaný Mitchum, postavu obdařuje novými kvalitami, zejména jakousi znaveností životem, která se projevuje v jeho výrazu i řadě zapamatování hodných replik. Na rozdíl od Marlowea a Dlouhého loučení se Sbohem buď, lásko má odehrává v minulosti, ale výsledek spíše než věrnou rekonstrukci připomíná mýtické simulakrum Los Angeles počátku 40. let. (mh)


Although he was perfectly suited for the role of Philip Marlowe, he never had the chance to play him in the 1940s, when Hollywood studios repeatedly adapted Raymond Chandler’s novels. Instead, he had to wait several decades, until he was in his sixties. We’re talking about the iconic Robert Mitchum, who ultimately played Marlowe twice in the 1970s film adaptations of Farewell, My Lovely and The Big Sleep. At the NFF, we’re screening the first of these, a retro-noir directed by the still-living Dick Richards, who turns 90 this year. The fact that Marlowe is played by an aging Mitchum imbues the character with new qualities, particularly a certain weariness with life that is evident in his expression and a number of memorable lines. Unlike Marlowe and The Long Goodbye, Farewell, My Love is set in the past, but the result resembles a mythical simulacrum of early 1940s Los Angeles rather than a faithful reconstruction. (mh)
